It usually starts small

An elbow at 1am. A loud sigh and a pillow flipped over. Then one night they take their pillow and phone charger to the guest room, “just for now”.

If you’re the one who snores, you lie there pretending to be asleep. If you’re the one lying awake, you’re tired in a way that’s hard to explain to anyone else.

It’s nobody’s fault. But a hundred nights like that add up.

What’s actually going on

In deep sleep, the muscles in your face and jaw relax, and for a lot of people the mouth drifts open.

When it does, your jaw drops back slightly and the airway behind your tongue narrows. Air rushing through that tighter space makes the soft tissue at the back of your throat vibrate. That’s the snore.

If you’ve ever heard a recording of yourself asleep, you can often hear the moment it happens: quiet breathing, then a shift, and the sound gets louder and rougher.

With your mouth closed you breathe through your nose, and for many people that’s much quieter.

Why the usual fixes often don’t help

Sleeping on your side. Nasal strips. Special pillows. Cutting back on alcohol. They’re all worth trying, and they help some people.

But none of them do anything about a mouth that falls open once you’re asleep. That’s the part mouth tape is designed for.

Why not just use tape from the drawer?

Plenty of people try that first. Ordinary tape is stiff, too sticky and hard on the skin around your mouth. It’s easy to end up peeling it off at 3am.

AERA is made to be worn all night:

  • Thin, soft woven fabric that moves with your face
  • Hypoallergenic, latex-free and dermatologically tested
  • Holds your lips gently together rather than sealing them
  • Designed to peel off gently in the morning
  • 30 individually packed strips
  • Before bed

Start with clean, dry lips, because skincare and lip balm stop it sticking. Place one strip across the centre of your lips.

  • Overnight

Breathe through your nose as normal. You can take it off any time.

  • In the morning

Peel it off slowly from one corner and throw it away.

First time? Wear it for 15 minutes while you read or watch TV, so it feels normal by bedtime.

What to expect

Night 1. It can feel a bit unusual at first. It encourages comfortable nose breathing from the first night.

Week 1. Many people notice less morning dry mouth and wake up feeling more refreshed.

Week 2+. You stop thinking about it. It’s just part of turning the lamp off.

Ongoing. A simple nightly habit that supports healthier breathing while you sleep.

Everyone’s different. Individual experiences vary.

When to see a doctor first

Mouth tape isn’t for everyone. If you gasp or choke in your sleep, or someone has noticed you stop breathing, see your GP before using AERA. Those can be signs of sleep apnoea, which needs a proper check.

Don’t use it if you can’t breathe comfortably through your nose (a cold, a blocked nose, bad hay fever), after heavy drinking or sedatives, or on children.

Questions

Can I still breathe?

Yes. You breathe through your nose, the way you do when you’re awake. The tape holds your lips gently together and you can take it off any time. Only use it when your nose is clear.

It’s my partner who snores. Can I buy it for them?

Of course. The 30-night guarantee applies whoever’s wearing it.

Will it hurt to take off?

The adhesive is designed to be gentle on skin. Peel it slowly from one corner.

What about a beard or moustache?

It can work, but how well it sticks depends on how thick the hair is and where you place the strip.

Is it only for snoring?

No. It’s also designed for people who wake up with a dry mouth, or still feel tired after a full night’s sleep.

Individual experiences vary. AERA is designed to support nose breathing during sleep. It isn’t a treatment for sleep apnoea or any other medical condition.
